However, farmers also grew hemp to clean soil that was contaminated. This is because hemp removes heavy metals and radioactive toxins from polluted soil through a process called phytoremediation. In this process, fast-growing hemp roots absorb contaminants and are even able to convert toxins into other harmless substances. Approximately seventy varieties of technical hemp are allowed to be grown in the European Union. It is an extremely versatile plant that can be processed almost entirely. To become organic, hemp producers must go much further than simply avoiding the use of pesticides. As with other certification programs, organic crops must meet several strict requirements, from soil conditions to plant processing.
